The Novartis
Foundation is a scientific and educational charity, formed in 1949 by
the Swiss company Ciba (now Novartis). Located in central London, at the heart of the
scientific community, we exist to promote scientific excellence by arranging
internationally acclaimed scientific meetings, publishing books and communicating science
to the public.
AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING THE FUTURE OF THE FOUNDATION Towards the end of 2006, the Trustees of the Novartis Foundation were informed that the Novartis Company’s support for the Foundation would cease at the end of February 2008. The Trustees have considered various options for the future, the favoured of which is a merger with another, cognate, organization whereupon the Foundation will then formally be dissolved. This remains contingent on the resolution of a number of technical matters, which we hope to bring to a successful conclusion in the spring. In the meantime, no Foundation symposia, discussion meetings or open meetings will be held and no symposium bursaries awarded. Symposium volumes will continue to be published up to and including NF293 Genetic effects on environmental vulnerability to disease, previous volumes still in print may be purchased from John Wiley and Son, and earlier, out-of-print, volumes directly from the Foundation (email orders to booksales@novartisfound.org.uk) subject to availability. Insofar as the Foundation’s hospitality services are concerned, the function at 41 Portland Place will continue trading and a full booking, catering and hospitality service will be on offer throughout 2008. Information on bookings for 2009 dates will be available later in the year. Derek J. Chadwick, Director Contact details: The Novartis Foundation, 41 Portland
