Scientific Meetings

The organization of high-level symposia and discussion meetings for small, international groups of invited experts has been at the core of our activities over the last 50 years. More recently we have also held open meetings allied to our symposia, and public lectures and debates on topical scientific issues.

Symposia The three-day symposia are the best known of our meetings, and have their own unique identity. They bring together 25–30 leading scientists to discuss extensively topics that are currently at the cutting edge of scientific research. Eight symposia are held annually and researchers from 60 countries have participated in these meetings over the years. On this page you will find details of the symposium programme, a full archive of past meetings. These symposia are published, usually within eight to ten months: details of these books, which include the discussions from the meeting in an edited form, are available on the Publications page.    Open Meetings Held following symposia, these one-day meetings present valuable opportunities for the wider scientific community to participate in our activities. Collaborations have been established with scientific organizations such as the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Institution, the Royal Society of Medicine and the Physiological Society, who are able to offer help with lecture theatre facilities, hospitality and advertising.
Discussion Meetings We also offer a programme of one-day discussion meetings organized on similar lines to the symposia but which are not published. Much of the time is allocated to unrecorded discussion, allowing new ideas to be explored in an informal atmosphere.
